Extraction of a wisdom tooth refers to the surgical removal of one or more of the third molars, commonly known as wisdom teeth, which are located at the back of the mouth. These teeth typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 25, but often lack enough space to grow in properly. When a wisdom tooth is impacted, meaning it is unable to emerge fully or is misaligned, it can cause pain, swelling, infection, or damage to adjacent teeth.

Wisdom tooth extraction is typically carried out under local anesthesia to numb the area, though sedation or general anesthesia may be used for more complicated cases or when multiple teeth are being removed. The dentist or oral surgeon creates an incision in the gum tissue to reach the tooth, which may need to be divided into smaller sections for easier removal. Once the tooth is taken out, patients receive detailed post-operative care instructions.

Benefits of Extraction of Wisdom Tooth

Prevents Pain and Discomfort

Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth can cause pain, swelling, and irritation in the gums or surrounding teeth. Extraction helps relieve these discomforts.

Prevents Infection:

When wisdom teeth don't fully emerge or become impacted, they can create pockets where bacteria accumulate, leading to infections or abscesses.

Reduces the Risk of Tooth Damage:

If wisdom teeth are misaligned at an angle, they can put pressure on adjacent teeth, leading to tooth decay, gum disease, or even damage to neighboring teeth.

Prevents Crowding

Wisdom teeth can cause overcrowding or misalignment of the other teeth, especially in people with smaller jaws. Removing them helps maintain the alignment.
